Thank you for attending Dryland Training

By | November 12th, 2016|Categories: D-Team, X-Team|

Thank you all for attending today’s Dryland Training and Parents meeting.

A few things to start thinking about:

– Season Passes, avoid the lines

– Check your gear; do gloves fit, snow pants, helmets, etc?

– Waxes, tunes, avoid the rush and drop them off now

Have a great weekend, enjoy the sunshine and do your snow dances!

Parent’s Guide to Comp Days

By | November 11th, 2016|Categories: X-Team|

Competition days always seem so chaotic.  At comps away from Buck Hill, everyone (coaches included) is trying to find out where everyone needs to be and when.   At Buck Hill comps, the coaches are busy setting up the courses and are not as available in the morning to help out inside.

Out of the chaos, there is a system.  One of the ways to deal with things is to be patient.  Answers will come to questions—eventually.  Just keep asking.  The second way to deal with comp day chaos is to be as organized as possible.

Competition registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the competition, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Organization begins the night before the comp:

Be sure the rider’s/skier’s bag is stocked, and nothing is missing:

  • helmet
  • goggles
  • waterproof gloves/mittens (with an extra pair)
  • neck gaiter/ scarf/ other warm items
  • boots (both of them)
  • hat (and an extra one)
  • sunscreen (even in Minnesota!!!)
  • lip balm
  • ski socks (2 pairs)

Be sure your racer has the proper clothes laid out and ready to go:

  • long underwear
  • ski pants
  • parka

Pack a lunch and lots of snacks for in-between times (unless you don’t mind paying ski area prices)

Tune those skis/boards (preferably older racers should do their own).

Be sure you have directions to the area.

Go to bed early.  All competitors need a good nights sleep.  The day starts early and can go long.

Morning of the comp:

Give yourself plenty of time in case of problems.

Be sure the rider/skier (and yourself) eat a good breakfast.

All riders/skiers are pre-registered, there is no advantage to being the first person at registration.

At the ski area:

Buy lift tickets.

Ask at the ticket window where comp registration.  (If not, follow the crowd, they are likely going to the same place you are.)

Registration opens at 8:30 am.

At registration, find your competitors’s age group and pick up the bib.  Find out which run the comp will be held on.

Look for Buck Hill coaches.  There will be one at the registration area (if you are very early, hang on, we’ll get there).  Check in with that coach for any other directions and to get your competitor’s bib marked.

Competition Specifications:

All competitors will compete in three events, Big Air, Slopestyle, and Alpine (Carving Cup Competition)

1)         Big Air – One trick performed over a man-made jump.

A minimum of 2 jumps must be built to accommodate lower and higher level competitors. Starting and landing areas must be clearly marked (paint, kool-aid).  The landing pad must also be marked in equal increments according to length.  Competitors will choose which jump they will use.

Big Air Jumps must adhere to MSRL specifications.

The jumps must not be altered unless deemed to be unsafe.  All changes must be made as needed. Coaches’ inspection must be completed by 8:00 a.m.

The course monitor/referee should be clearly identifiable for safety and crowd control.

If a competitor is performing a rodeo, corked spin, or switch attempt, the starter must be notified.

Any attempt at an inverted trick will result in immediate disqualification from the entire competition.

Big Air jumps will be open for practice hits a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the beginning of each competition age grouping.

2) Slopestyle- Tricks performed during a run.  The tricks may consist of groundwork (ollies, spins) or air tricks using the obstacles within the run boundaries.   This event is not timed.

The course should take approximately 25-45 seconds to complete with clear visibility from start to finish.  Judges must have a clear view of the entire course.  Starting and finish areas must be clearly marked (paint, kool-aid).  No jumps higher than 4 feet.  ¼ pipes and hips no higher than 6 feet.  The course must have at least six hits in two lines of travel.  Man-made obstacles are allowed. Courses must be built to accommodate lower and higher level competitors.

The elements must not be altered unless deemed to be unsafe.  All changes must be made as needed. Coaches’ inspection must be completed by 8:00 a.m.

The course monitor/referee should be clearly identifiable for safety and crowd control.

The slopestyle course will be open for practice a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the beginning of each competition age grouping.

Alpine – Timed race on a gated course. The alpine competition is a timed event.  The best time of two runs will be used to tabulate scores and rank.

Competitors will be given 15 minutes to view the courses.  Giant Slalom and Dual Slalom inspection in done by sideslipping off the course.  Terrain Slalom inspection in done by slipping the course in a controlled manner.

Some age groups will finish up much sooner than other age groups.  Results and awards are announced about 60 minutes after the last age group is finished.  Most areas attempt to get results and awards started by about 4:00 PM.  Sometimes it can be later.  If you need to leave before the award ceremony, the head coach will pick up any ribbons and will obtain results. Please notify a coach if you need to leave early.

Parents may elect to ski or not.  If you have two or more kids competing, you may end up moving between several courses.  Wear warm boots!!

Comp Day Cancellationsraces will only be canceled if the host area closes.  Contact the race hosting area if you have any questions or need directions:
